Mr. Miller retired from the United Nations on June 30, 2023 as the Director of Regional Operations in the United Nations Department of Safety and Security. As the Director of DRO, Mr. Miller was responsible for the global security enterprise of the United Nations in the field. Mr. Miller previously served with distinction in the United State Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service for 30 years, rising to Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Director of the Diplomatic Security Service. Mr. Miller has extensive field experience with long-term assignments in Egypt, Iraq, the Philippines, Jerusalem and Pakistan and numerous short-term assignments to resolve urgent and critical security issues. In addition to the most senior assignments in the Diplomatic Security Service at the headquarters level, he has served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for High Threat Programs,Regional Director of Contingency Operations, and the Chief of Security and Law Enforcement Training.
Among his many awards, Mr. Miller is also a recipient of the Department of State Award for Bravery. Prior to joining the State Department in 1987, Mr. Miller served as an infantry officer in the United States Marines. Focused, strategically minded security leader with demonstrated experience in high-profile, high-scrutiny international security and law enforcement positions within the United Nations and U.S. Department of State. Mr. Miller was constantly at the center of the UN’s and U.S. government’s most highly visible crisis management challenges on a global scale.
